Counter-Strike 1.6, developed by Valve Corporation, is the most popular online team shooter in history, and for good reason. More than a decade on, it’s still the best and the most entertaining game of its type, has the best game modes and scenarios, and is the best place for gamers to truly demonstrate their mouse abilities.
The fast-paced and team-oriented gameplay of Counter-Strike has stayed relatively the same throughout the years. In case you are not familiar with the game, Counter-Strike 1.6 is a first-person shooter where two teams must face each other to achieve a set objective. These two teams are split into terrorists and counter-terrorist strike teams, and must fight against each other to place or deactivate bombs or in other scenarios, keep or rescue hostages. A player can choose to play as one of eight different default character models, four for each side.
Before every round players are given few seconds before the round begins (known as “freeze time”) to prepare and buy equipment, during which they cannot attack or move. Players can choose different weapons, body armor, grenades and various other items. All this must be bought with the money earned in previous rounds. Players start out a match with a specified amount, and will receive more as the match goes on, with the maximum possible amount a player can amass set to $16000. Money is provided for completing rounds regardless of being the victor or loser, but more currency is awarded for winning a round. Also, in all modes, killing an enemy player rewards $300 to the killer.
The scoreboard displays team scores in addition to statistics for each player: name, kills, deaths and ping. The scoreboard also indicates whether a player is dead, carrying the bomb (on bomb maps), or is the VIP (on assassination maps), although information on players on the opposing team is hidden from a player until his/her death, as this information can be important.
Counter-Strike 1.6 itself is a mod, and it has developed its own community of script writers and mod creators. Some mods add bots, while others remove features of the game, and others create different modes of play. Some mods, often called “admin plugins”, give server administrators more flexible and efficient control over their servers. There are some mods which affect gameplay heavily, such as Gun Game, where players start with a basic pistol and must score kills to receive better weapons, and Zombie Mod, where one team consists of zombies and must “spread the infection” by killing the other team (using only knife). There are also the Superhero and mods which mix the first-person gameplay of Counter-Strike with an experience system, allowing a player to become more powerful as they continue to play. The game is also highly customizable on the player’s end, allowing the user to install or even create their own custom skins, HUDs, spray graphics, sprites, and sound effects, given the proper tools.
Version of the game that you can download from our website includes all game files from the original Counter-Strike, ledgendary game modes and maps from the franchise such as CS_Assault, DE_Dust, CS_Mansion, DE_Aztec and many more. What’s more the game takes up less than 300 megabytes and does not require anything extra to play: just install and run.
As usual with Counter-Strike you can play online or over a local area network (LAN).
Counter-Strike 1.6 is still, despite its age, one of the best first-person shooters around. Single player mode, playing against ‘bots’, can get a little boring, but when you start playing with friends or online, you realize just how much fun it really can be.
